New Ground
Oil on panel, 2018
29 × 29 cm
Working with a compressed range of greens, the painting builds a soft, uncertain space that hovers between depth and surface. Loose, looping marks recall graffiti tags, made quickly and instinctively, under pressure. Their fast, assertive gestures sit against a calmer, layered field that borrows something from Monet’s diffuse atmospheres and sense of space. The work reflects on these different conditions of mark making — urgency and risk on the one hand, slow accumulation on the other — and how both can shape how a space is felt.
